Closing Weekend at Sun Valley

Celebrating the people and places that make our community special

On this month’s episode of Voices & Views, we highlight one of Sun Valley’s most anticipated events in outdoor recreation: Closing Weekend. The community comes out in full swing, dressed up in retro gear ready to ski and celebrate before the mountain closes for the season.

What You Missed: Closing Weekend 2022

Closing weekend is always a bittersweet end to the winter season, and this year was no exception.

Complete with a fresh dusting of powder thanks to the always unpredictable Idaho spring weather, skiers and snowboarders had a chance to enjoy one last day on the hill before the mountain closed for the season.

Festivities lasted all weekend long, with Saturday kicking off the end-of-season “Baldy Bash” street party, complete with live music, a barbeque, and a bar. Concerts started at 2:30 pm with headliner Casio Dreams hitting the stage at 4:00 pm—just in time as the lifts closed for the day.

And per Sun Valley tradition, mountain-goers were encouraged to dress in their most outrageous, colorful, retro ski attire. The patio outside Warm Springs Lodge was a sea of bright purples, yellows, teals, and magentas—an ode to the classic “gaper” style gear.

Sunday marked the final day of celebrations as hundreds of guests joined together at the base of Warm Springs. With snow falling all weekend long, the valley’s outdoor enthusiasts were in for a treat as winter weather conditions made one last appearance before the season officially ended.

What’s Next?

With the final days of winter now behind us, we now have our eyes set on spring and summer activities. With plenty of outdoor recreation available across the Wood River Valley—from biking to flyfishing, hiking, paddle boarding, and everything in between—we’re gearing up for a great season ahead.
